Promoting Family Economic Well-Being Beyond Poverty

Child poverty is rooted in decades-long trends of economic hardships among families across the nation. From the grassroots movement of United Ways, measures of financial hardships have emerged through the measurements of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). Join us in discovering the impacts of United Ways' data collection and the ALICE movement that promotes well-being for families beyond poverty.

About the Speaker

Sarah Hamilton Berthelot serves as President and CEO of the Louisiana Association of United Ways, an organization of seven-member United Ways.  For ten years, Sarah has worked to advance the collective action of United Ways in Louisiana. Sarah serves on the United Way Worldwide Network Advisory Council, a body of leaders spanning the global United Way Network.

With 28 years of nonprofit experience, Sarah fosters the development of statewide impact initiatives, which leverage technology, people-powered capabilities of United Ways and other nonprofit partners to unlock scaled solutions for human service delivery. She has led innovations that have collectively served more than a million Louisianians in their time of individual need. Sarah currently provides project leadership to nine public-private statewide partnerships, including strategic work with the Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services, Louisiana Department of Health, Louisiana Department of Corrections, and Louisiana Board of Regents. Under Sarah’s leadership, LAUW serves as the Principal Combined Fundraising Organization for the Louisiana State Combined Charitable Campaign, partnering with the Division of Administration and 111 state agency teams.

In collaboration with United Ways throughout Louisiana and United For ALICE, Sarah coordinated the introduction of ALICE to Louisiana in 2016 and leads the ALICE Project in Louisiana (ALICE stands for Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed).

Sarah has advanced the work of the Louisiana 211 Statewide Network, which has positioned Louisiana 211 to be one of the most agile 211 state systems in the country. Working as an aligned network of eight nonprofit organizations, Louisiana 211 ensures the people of our state can confidentially access accurate referral and navigation assistance to sources of help in order to meet needs.

Sarah and her husband, Jon, live in Youngsville. They are the proud parents of two children.
