When Pain Turns Inward or Outward: Teen Mental Health, Violence, and Suicide Prevention

Session Description

Adolescents who have experienced trauma may express distress through withdrawal, aggression, risk-taking, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or violence toward others. This session focuses specifically on teen and adolescent mental health, suicide risk, and violence prevention. Participants will review Louisiana and national suicide trends, including data showing suicide remains a leading cause of death among youth and that Louisiana's suicide rate has exceeded the national average in recent state reporting. The session will emphasize warning signs, protective factors, safe conversations, lethal means safety, crisis response, referral pathways, and intervention strategies that help families, schools, courts, and communities respond before harm occurs.
