Learning Across State Lines: June Message from the Director

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to travel to Missoula, Montana, for a meeting with CASA state directors from across the country. These gatherings provide a valuable opportunity to step away from the day-to-day responsibilities of our work and spend time learning from leaders who are navigating many of the same opportunities and challenges within their own states.

While every state’s CASA network is structured differently, the heart of our work is the same. We are all working to strengthen local programs, support staff and volunteers, build effective partnerships, and ensure that children involved in the child welfare system have a consistent and dedicated advocate.

Throughout the meeting, we discussed the realities facing CASA organizations nationwide, shared strategies that have worked in our respective states, and explored ways state organizations can continue to grow and adapt. Some of the most meaningful conversations were not about large initiatives or complicated solutions. They were about the everyday work of leadership, the lessons learned through difficult seasons, and the importance of having trusted colleagues who understand the unique responsibility of supporting a statewide network.

These conversations also reminded me that Louisiana has much to contribute. Our programs are innovative, resilient, and deeply committed to the communities they serve. I was proud to share the progress taking place across our state and the partnerships that make our work possible. At the same time, I returned home with new ideas, fresh perspectives, and an even greater appreciation for the value of collaboration.

It can be easy to become so focused on the work directly in front of us that we forget to look beyond our own boundaries. Meetings like this allow us to learn from what is happening in other states, consider new approaches, and reflect on how those ideas may strengthen our work here in Louisiana.

The relationships developed among state directors are also an important source of support. This work is deeply rewarding, but it can also be complex. Having a network of leaders who are willing to share resources, offer honest insight, and help one another navigate difficult decisions makes us all stronger.

I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Louisiana CASA and our statewide network in these national conversations. I returned from Montana encouraged by the commitment of CASA leaders across the country and renewed in my belief that we accomplish more when we learn from one another.

No matter the distance between our states, we remain connected by a shared purpose: helping ensure that every child has a voice, a safe and permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive.
